Most people hate writing a cover letter even more than they hate preparing a resume! I recently worked with a job seeker who said that he refused to apply for any graduate roles that required a cover letter to accompany the application. This is was what I liked to call a “resume bomber” – someone whose aim is to apply to as many jobs as possible and just “hope for the best”.

The average length of a job search is at an all-time high in America. For the unemployed, it’s now well over 7 months. What’s sad is that other studies show people give up looking after 5 months. That’s not good.

Over the last two decades, there has been a steady growth in the number of workers finding temp jobs through a placement agency. Canada now has one in eight of its working population engaged in a temp job. While some employers are hiring on a temporary basis due to current economic uncertainty, a large number of companies engaged temp workers when the economy was buoyant. Clearly there is more to temporary work than a response to the ups and downs of the economy.
